LPVO vs MPVO, Which is Better for You?

2025-02-24

If you’re into shooting or hunting, you’ve definitely heard about LPVOs. But what about their less-talked-about sibling, the MPVO? Despite not getting as much attention in the optics world, MPVOs are gaining traction for their ability to offer higher magnification while maintaining a compact design.

So, what exactly is an MPVO? It’s short for Medium Power Variable Optic, and it fills the gap between LPVOs and traditional high-power scopes. If you find high-power scopes cumbersome and are looking to challenge yourself with longer distances, an MPVO might be just what you need.

Key Characteristics: LPVO vs. MPVO

Magnification Ranges

LPVOs: Typically start at 1x and can go up to 10x. Common configurations include 1-6x, 1-8x, and 1-10x, and you can find these across many brands.

MPVOs: While, for MPVOs, there is no specified starting magnification. Now, we can find various kinds of MPVOs, they may start at 1.5x, 2.5x, 3x, etc. Besides, unlike LPVOs, they can go up to 9x, 12x, 14x, etc.

Effective Aiming Range

Then, when you need to go for a MPVO rather than a LPVO? Or we can break this question down to a simple one: what distance is suitable for LPVO or MPVO shooting?

Let’s compare the effective aiming range first.

For a LPVO, you can aim at objects up to 600-800 yards (it depends 1-6x or 1-10x LPVO you are using) at highest magnification.

While with the help of MPVO, you can aim a target up to 1000 yards.

In short, if you need a scope for closer-range shooting, an LPVO is a great choice. For longer distances (800-1000 yards), an MPVO is more suitable.

What are the Pros and Cons of LPVO and MPVO?

At Vector Optics and our sub-brand VictOptics, we design both LPVOs (Low Power Variable Optics) and MPVOs (Mid Power Variable Optics) to cater to a variety of shooting needs. Our high-end Vector Optics models are built to withstand extreme conditions and heavy recoil, making them ideal for real firearms. But we haven’t forgotten about airgun enthusiasts! For those looking for a budget-friendly option without compromising on quality, models like the S6 and SOI from VictOptics are excellent choices for recreational shooting, offering solid glass quality at an affordable price.

Now, let’s dive into the key differences between LPVOs and MPVOs across both brands to help you decide which one suits your needs best.

Vector Optics Continental LPVO vs MPVO

Let’s dive into the differences between the Contiental 2-12x44 CTR rifle scope SCFF-67 MPVO and the Continental 2-12x24i fiber rifle scope SCOC-47 -LPVO, two of Vector Optics’ standout models designed for distinct shooting scenarios.

First, let’s talk about magnification and versatility. The SCFF-67 is a 2-12x MPVO, making it ideal for mid-range target shooting and plain game hunting, with its First Focal Plane (FFP) reticle allowing for accurate distance estimation at any magnification. On the other hand, the SCOC-47 is a 1-10x LPVO, offering true 1x magnification for both-eyes-open shooting, perfect for close-range precision while still delivering clarity at longer distances.

When it comes to field of view, the SCOC-47 LPVO shines with a wider field of view (107.59-11.78 ft @ 100 yards), allowing for faster target acquisition in close-range scenarios. The SCFF-67 MPVO, while narrower in field of view (54.0-10.8 ft @ 100 yards), excels in precision and target identification at mid to long ranges, thanks to its higher magnification and FFP reticle.

Both models share features like 11-level illumination, turret lock functions, and IP67 waterproofing, ensuring reliability in various conditions. However, the SCFF-67 stands out with its 55 MIL elevation adjustment range, ideal for long-range precision, while the SCOC-47 offers a more balanced 35 MIL elevation range for versatile shooting.

In summary, if you’re looking for a scope that excels in close to mid-range shooting with quick target acquisition, the SCOC-47 LPVO is your go-to. But if you need superior magnification and precision for mid to long-range targets, the SCFF-67 MPVO is the better choice. Both are built to perform, so your decision ultimately depends on your shooting needs and preferences.

VictOptics S6 LPVO vs SOI MPVO

Let’s compare VictOptics popular S6 series LPVO with our new SOI series MPVO.

First, let’s compare OPSL-33 (1-6x LPVO) and VIOC-01(1.5-5x MPVO). They have similar magnification and both of them have fully multi-coated lenses. Nevertheless, the new MPVO is more compact than the old S6 because it weighs only 225g (200g lighter) and greatly reduces bulk of your air rifle. A lighter scope is better for long hunting trips. If you are struggling to find a light telescopic sight, this VIOC-01 is a good choice.

Second, they provide you with different field of views. You can see from the following chart that the OPSL33 LPVO has a wider field of view(109.2-18.2 feet@ 100 yards) than VIOC-01 MPVO (84.9-25.5 ft @ 100 yards).

Third, LPVO can quickly acquire your target and the 1x true zoom factor allows you to use it with two eyes open, just like a red dot sight. Therefore, it is a best choice for close-range shooting. The downside of LPVO is also clear. The limited magnification may be insufficient for long range shots. A MPVO with larger magnification provides better target identification and precision at longer ranges. Also, it can offer detailed target visibility.

In summary, if you need a scope for closer-range shooting, an LPVO is a great choice. For longer distances, an MPVO is more suitable.

Pros of LPVOs

  • Quick Target Acquisition: With a true 1x zoom, you can shoot with both eyes open, similar to using a red dot sight. This makes LPVOs perfect for close-range shooting.

  • Lightweight and Compact: Ideal for long hunting trips where carrying weight matters.

Pros of MPVOs

  • Higher Magnification: Provides better target identification and precision for long-range shooting.

  • Versatility: Fits in between cumbersome high-power scopes and more compact LPVOs, offering a balance of power and convenience.

In conclusion, both LPVOs and MPVOs offer distinct advantages tailored to different shooting scenarios. LPVOs deliver rapid target acquisition and versatile, close-range performance with their wide field of view and true 1x capabilities—ideal for dynamic, on-the-move shooting situations. Conversely, MPVOs bridge the gap between traditional high-power scopes and LPVOs by offering higher magnification and refined precision for mid to long-range engagements. Whether you prioritize lightweight versatility or enhanced long-distance clarity, the choice ultimately depends on your shooting style and specific needs. Both options, engineered by Vector Optics and VictOptics, are designed to perform reliably under various conditions, ensuring you’re equipped with the right optic for your next hunting or shooting adventure.
