I would like to warmly thank VECTOR OPTICS for trusting me with this first product review. Hunting guided this first choice of scope.

SCOPE WEIGHT

The total weight of the scope including rings and covers is 836 grams.

TURRET KNOBS

The dials are easy to turn, precise and offer a sensitive and audible click. The turrets offer more elevation and windage range than advertised (60 MOA). They run at 60 clicks per turn.

The total number of clics audible on each turret goes like :

436 clics for the elevation turret, or 109 MOA

426 clics for the windage turret, or 106 MOA

The turrets do not offer zero indexing or stop zero functions.

POWER RING (ZOOM)

The zoom wheel is quite stiff, which is considered a negative factor in hunting mode. We will see if this defect will diminish with use.The maximum zoom stops at 12X, which is suitable for hunting, but going up to 15x would have been better if you consider hunting small game or over fairly long distances (250 meters). The 3X is perfect for close hunting, with 4X being a maximum that should never be exceeded for a conventional hunting scope.

IMAGE SHARPNESS

The scope provides excellent image clarity in all lighting conditions, and more than enough in the dark to hunt ethically up to the legal cut-off times in our country.

EDGE-TO-EDGE VIEW

The eyepiece offers a large view width, although its outline is still quite noticeable and far from edge-to-edge if compared to the Forester 3-15x50 telescope, which I consider a benchmark in that matter for VO.

MINIMUM FOCAL LENGTH

For a crisp image on a crisp reticle, in a rough test with the zoom at 3x, 6x and then 12x, the minimum distances were around 8, 18 and 50 meters.

EYE RELIEF

The eye relief is very comfortable for shooting powerful calibers but seems a little less than 4.13 inches announced at 3X zoom.

RETICLE PATTERN AND RESOLUTION

It is a reticle made for hunting (German #4) with fat main lines allowing for instinctive alignment and a clearly visible center point surrounded by fine crosshairs providing a clear view of the target. The center point is advertised at 0,9 MOA, making it easy to spot even when not lit, which is suitable for hunting situations. But it could be finer since it is supported by lighting that allows it to be spotted in all light conditions. At very long distances, the current 0,9 MOA can go so far as to hide part of a small target or distort the required correction. The horizontal and vertical fat lines remain very visible at half-light, but the fine crosshair lines disappear completely at dark dawn, where the lighted dot takes over in a clear way. The fat portion of the lines could not exceed 50% of their length to provide a better field of view while allowing for quick target acquisition. A VECNS-4GF type would be inspiring in that way.

LIGHTED DOT

In sunny conditions, the lighted dot (red) only appears from the value 7, the upper range of values being more than sufficient for its use, although not mandatory with such a well-defined reticle. For hunting in low light, the value 1 may be sufficient, and the high values 10 and 11 illuminate the perimeter of the eyepiece in a notorious and almost harmful way in red. The light wheel is pleasant to hand, without clicking sounds (a plus), and adjusts the light without an intermediate dead center. It is powered by a CR2032 battery, which is easy to find in the market.

PARALLAX EFFECT

It is perceptible from zero to 50 meters and becomes zero at 100 meters. It appears slightly at 100 meters when zoomed in as much as possible. But for hunting, this difference has no real impact.

TRACKING TEST

The test was carried out on a wall of square concrete blocks located 50 meters from the objective. The path was made from complete turns of the height and windage adjustment knobs, and it gave a perfect result. To this end, the reference point printed at the base of each of the dials allows precise identification of the initial "0" values.

IMPACT RESISTANCE

Although this factor is only measurable after a very long series of shots, a simple test of about fifteen bullets, after a solid and rigorous assembly of the scope, will have made it possible to summarily validate the robustness of the internal components on a.30-06 sprg caliber. The scope is mounted on Vector Optics 4-screw base mounts, which are supplied in the box. A first test was carried out at 50 meters, just in case. At 100 meters, the two brands of commercial cartridges produced in order groups of 1.0 and 0.7 inches. The last cartridge was used to check some internal components. A path of 20 clicks up, 20 clicks right, 20 clicks down and 20 clicks left, followed by a well-supported shot led the bullet into the same sector as the best grouping. No internal displacement effect has therefore been observed since the zoom and focal length adjustments have not been altered either.

CONCLUSION

This scope can be highly recommended for hunting in all light conditions, for easy instinctive shooting ranging from 20 to 250 meters, using a powerful caliber such as the.30-06 sprg. I can't wait to try the product myself on the hunt this fall.

PROS: Image clarity; simplicity of use; shock proof packaging; price.

CONS: Stiff zoom dial; non-adjustable parallax; a flaw in the edge-to-edge contour; maximum zoom 12X.
